Jesus Can Restore Your Soul

Let’s face the facts. Everyone on the planet has been wounded. People you meet every day and would never suspect, carry deep wounds from the past. They cope the best they can but the pain still remains.

Coping Never Heals

Coping only covers up the pain and never truly deals with it. Coping brings only temporary relief. Many times coping makes matters worse because of the things used to attempt to relieve the pain.

A few of the destructive ways of dealing with pain are seeking to medicate it with drugs, alcohol, comfort eating, shopping sprees, gambling, sexual relationships, or whatever we think might help. Isolation is a common way to protect oneself from further pain. There are also those who harm themselves physically by burning, cutting, or harming themselves in other ways to try and quiet the pain in their hearts.

At best, coping mechanisms can help us get through the day. They never solve the problem. It always remains there. Sometimes in the background. Sometimes in the forefront. But it never goes away and healing never comes.

Jesus Can Heal Your Pain

If you’re experiencing pain in your heart, I have good news for you. Jesus can heal your pain. One of the reasons Jesus came into the world to die for you was to bring healing to your broken heart. Listen to Isaiah 53:4-5:

Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.
But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.

The first two lines of verse four tell us that Jesus bore or carried our griefs and sorrows. He took them upon Himself when He went to the cross.

Both the word griefs and sorrows (note they are plural) carry the idea of physical and emotional sickness or anguish. Jesus bore your physical and emotional anguish on the cross.

You were never designed by God to bear long-term pain. He knew you would experience pain in this world, that’s why He sent Jesus. Jesus is the one who can heal your broken heart. No matter how deep the wound, the power of the cross goes deeper.

“. . . He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted . . . ” (Isaiah 61:1)

“He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)

“He restores my soul . . .” (Psalm 23:3)

Jesus is able and willing to heal your wounds. His goal for your life is wholeness. He died so you might experience life as God intends it to be.

Coming to Jesus in Faith

You may be thinking, if that’s true, then why do I still have this pain? I’ve prayed and begged God to take the pain away and it still remains. God doesn’t want us to approach Him as a beggar. He wants us to approach Him in faith.

I’ve noticed in my own life that when I’m in pain and cry out to God to take it away, it rarely ever happens. I think it'’s because my focus is on the pain and not on the Lord. I only want relief. I’m hurting and want it to stop. I’m not really looking to the Lord in faith, I am just crying out hoping for relief.

It’s when I approach God in faith and give Him the pain in my heart, item by item, and ask Him to heal me that I am healed. I’m coming Jesus as my burden bearer and giving Him the pain. When I give Him the pain I also give up my right to hold anything against the one that hurt me.

My heart will never heal when its filled with anger, bitterness, and longing for revenge. So often healing is connected to forgiveness. In releasing my pain, I also release the one who hurt me.

Healing and unforgiveness are incompatible. As long as I carry

unforgiveness in my heart it can never be made whole. Unforgiveness is like a poison that kills a person slowly, imperceptibly.

The best thing I can do is to bring it all to Jesus and let Him handle it. He is the righteous judge and He will make sure that He deals with those who hurt me. I can trust Him to heal my heart. I can trust Him to avenge me and bring ultimate justice.

How About You?

Are you in pain? Do you have situations in your past that haunt you? Are the ways you’re attempting to cope failing to heal the pain? Then I want to encourage you to come to Jesus. He is always there and wants to heal your broken heart. But you must come on His terms.

Are you willing to give Jesus, not only the pain but also the person who hurt you? Are you willing to let them go so you can experience the healing and peace that only God can give? Then I encourage you to set aside some time and go through the following steps with the Lord.

  1. Ask the Lord what wound He wants to heal.

  2. Identify the situation that caused the wound.

  3. List every negative emotion you’re experiencing.

  4. One by one bring them to the Lord and give them to Him.

  5. If there is someone you need to forgive, give them to the Lord knowing He will be their judge.

  6. Ask God to heal your broken heart.

I’d like to end our time together with a quote from Oswald Chambers“Leave the broken, irreversible past in God’s hands, and step out into the invincible future with Him.” ~ Oswald Chambers
