Teach Us to Pray
There is no doubt in my mind of the importance and power of prayer. Jesus said that prayer moves mountains that stand in the way of the will of God. When the disciples asked Jesus how to pray, He said the following in Matthew 6:9-13:
9 “Pray, then, in this way:‘Our Father who is in heaven,Hallowed be Your name.10 ‘Your kingdom come.Your will be done,On earth as it is in heaven.11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread.12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’]
This is an incredible prayer that I believe opens our understanding to insights and areas in which we can pray. We come as children to our Father. We’re not orphans begging God for things, but His beloved children seeking out a loving daddy.
Prayer acknowledges the greatness of God and gives Him honor. Even though He is our Father, He also is the Almighty God who is to be revered and worshiped. We recognize Him as the Holy One and yield to His authority in our lives.
Prayer also allows us to pray the will of the Father into situations on the earth. God wants us to discern His will and purpose and pray it into being. Prayer is believers finding the heart of God and praying it down on earth as it is in heaven. Prayer actually brings the purposes of God to pass in the earth.
Jesus also wants us to ask for the things that we need for our daily existence. Later in Matthew chapter six, Jesus already tells us not to worry about what we should eat, what we should drink, or about what we will for clothing. As children, we are simply coming to the Father and telling Him what we need.
Prayer is also a time where we can talk with God about our sins and seek His forgiveness and bring those who have hurt us to God. Jesus is showing the necessity of being a forgiving people because we are often in need of forgiveness.
Prayer also asks for God’s power to be released in our lives so that we live the overcoming life. God is our deliverer and that is good to remember as we walk through the perils of this world.
Prayer brings God into the situation. Prayer changes things. Prayer brings about the will of God for our lives and the lives of those for whom we pray.
Pray the Word of God
I am constantly looking to the Scriptures to pray. I want to follow the example of the apostle Paul, who gave us a glimpse of how he prays for people in his epistles. So what I decided to do today is to write a prayer to pray over you.
Every single word of this prayer is from the Scripture, except your name. This prayer is the heart of God for you. I want to speak it because of the power of the words being released, Reading it is also powerful because it is the word of God.
Even the original recipients of the letter would have heard it read by one of the leaders of the church. The whole congregation would gather together and letter read aloud. That is why many times I listen to the word on my iPhone while I’m following the text with my eyes. I want to hear the words with my ears and see them with my eyes.
So I’ve made a prayer that I’d like to speak over you and will also make accessible three forms of the prayer in PDF format for you to download if you desire. The first will be the prayer in a form that you could pray over yourself. There will also be one you can use when praying for a man and one for when praying for a woman.
By the way, you can use this prayer to pray over me. It’s God desire for our lives. So here is my prayer for you. I wish I could personalize it and say your name in this prayer. I am going to call you my friend as I pray for you. God knows you are listening or reading this and so every word is for you and you alone.
My Prayer for You
Father, I thank you for my friend. I pray that You would give them a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge You. I ask that You open the eyes of their heart and enlighten them to know the hope of Your calling and the riches of the glory of Your inheritance in the saints.
God, I thank you for the freedom You are giving my friend as You are transforming them from glory to glory into Your image through the power of the Holy Spirit. I thank You for transforming my friend by the renewing of their mind.
In the name of Jesus, I cast down every lofty thing in mind of my friend that would exalt itself against a true knowledge of You and replace it with an increasing knowledge of Yourself. May every stronghold of the false speculations of man be destroyed and be replaced by the truth of the gospel that manifests the power of Your salvation.
I pray that my friend would take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and be anxious for nothing but instead pray with thanksgiving to You. May my friend’s mind dwell and think upon whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, and is excellent and worthy of praise.
I ask that my friend be strengthened with power through the Holy Spirit in the inner man so they might be rooted and grounded in love. May they comprehend what is the breadth, and length, and height, and depth of Your love and be filled up to the fullness of You.
I pray that they would take up Your full armor (the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, and the sword of the Spirit) to stand against the schemes of the devil.
May they be strong in You and in the power of Your might. May they know the surpassing greatness of Your power according to the working of the strength of Your might and so be strengthened with all power according to Your glorious might.
May they experience the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge. and be filled with the knowledge of Your will with all spiritual wisdom and knowledge. May their love abound more and more in real knowledge and discernment, so they might approve those things that are excellent.
May Christ dwell in their hearts by faith so they might experience Your peace that passes all understanding. I pray that they might walk in a manner worthy of the Lord: sincere and blameless, pleasing You in all respects, bearing fruit for every good work, attaining steadfastness and patience, proving Your good, acceptable, and perfect will for their life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
