Who You Are in Christ You Are Overwhelmingly a Conqueror

If you’ve accepted Jesus Christ as Lord of your life, you are an overwhelming conqueror.

I want to read the verses that surround the truth about you today to get and idea of the context. It’s very important to understanding who you are in Christ and that no matter what takes place in your life, God’s love for you will never change.

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 Just as it is written,
“For Your sake we are being put to death all day long;We were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God is For you

The greatest thing to remember is that God is for you. And if He is on your side who can be against you. Some may rise up and claim charges against you and seek to condemn you, but God’s love remains unwavering for you.

Paul, the man who went through incredible trials to preach the Gospel, tells us that even when difficult things happen in our lives that we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. The things Paul mentions are difficult and go against some Bible teachers who claim everything will go well in your life once you accept Christ.

Following Christ doesn’t guarantee that things will be rosy in your life, but there is a guarantee that no matter what you face Christ will be with you and nothing can ever separate you from His love.

Nothing Can Separate You

In order to be a conqueror, there must be something to overcome. In verse 36 Paul lists seven things that can’t separate us from God and not one of them is a good thing.

  1. Tribulation is an oppressive state of physical, mental, social, or economic adversity.

  2. Distress is a narrowing of place that brings distress from a condition of anguish.

  3. Persecution is where a person is systematically hunting you down to inflict pain in your life because of Christ.

  4. Famine is a lack of food that causes violent hunger.

  5. Nakedness comes from lack of provision for clothing.

  6. Peril is dangerous or threatening conditions.

  7. The sword speaks of the possibility of facing death for what you believe.

You may be thinking, “Well thanks, Terry, for all the encouraging words. I’m glad you told me about persecution, famine, nakedness. In my mind, that’s not good news.”

Paul says that in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. So often it’s so easy to get your eyes on all the things that are going on around you and the negative impact they are having on your life. Paul looked past all the difficulties of life and kept his eyes on the love of God. He knew that no matter what happened in his life, God loved Him and that was a great comfort to him.

Have you ever thought about how Paul and Silas who were beaten with rods, cast into prison, and placed in stocks could pray and sing hymns to God so that the whole prison heard them? It’s because they knew that they were more than conquerors in Christ. They could cast them into prison, but they could never take away the love of God that strengthened them.

Paul was so convinced of the incredible promise of God’s love that he gave another list of things that couldn’t touch God’s love. God is so overwhelmingly for you and gave Himself so completely for you that nothing can change the victory won by Christ.

You Overcome in Everything

In the midst of the difficulties of life you are an overcomer in Christ. His victory is yours and nothing can take that away. Nothing can change it. Nothing can separate you from the love of God. Nothing!

  • Death can’t - if you die you go directly to the presence of the Lord. What could be better than that?

  • Life won't - even when things get tough, God is still with you. Nothing can separate you from His love.

  • Angels and principalities can’t - Jesus Christ rules over heaven and has conquered every demonic foe that can stand against you. He also gives you authority over all the works of the enemy.

  • Things present and things to come can’t - Paul assures you that no matter what happens in your life today, tomorrow, or on any other day, you are safe and secure in the love of God. He loves you with an everlasting love.

  • Powers can’t - No government or any other ruling power can influence the steadfast love of the Lord in your life.

  • Height or depth can’t - Nothing from the heavens to the very depths of hell can alter God’s love for you.

  • Any other created being can’t - There’s no one in all of creation that can separate you from the love of God.

So all with that said, I want to encourage you to look beyond your circumstances to the one who loves you. Put your hope and confidence in Him. Know that He is not the one bringing these things upon you. He is your source of strength and escape.

When things are difficult, run to the one who loves you. He’s always there to give you strength and victory through the wonderful blood of Jesus.
